With corrupt President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the presidential campaign, political betting markets have identified Vice President Kamala Harris and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as the front-runners for the Democratic presidential ticket. BetOnline wagers indicate that Harris is a favorite with 1/9 odds (-900) to be the Democratic presidential nominee. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, and former first lady Michelle Obama are among those with higher odds at getting the presidential nomination, while Shaprio is considered a longshot.
Shapiro currently leads as the favorite to be the VP nominee on BetOnline.ag, with 7/4 odds. North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper has 3/1 odds, followed by Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear at 5/1 and Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, both with 8/1 probabilities.
Since Biden’s announcement on Sunday that he would withdraw from the 2024 race, Harris has raised nearly $50 million in donations for her campaign. The historic declaration followed calls from a growing number of Democratic lawmakers for Biden to resign, as well as reports that the party’s leadership was trying to persuade the 81-year-old president that he would not be able to defeat former President Trump in November’s general election.
Immediately after Biden’s announcement, Harris declared her own presidential campaign and received the full support and endorsement of the outgoing president. Former President Barack Obama has not yet endorsed Harris but is instead backing a process where an “outstanding” nominee can emerge. In a statement, Obama praised Biden’s vision for America and expressed confidence in the Democratic Party’s ability to create a successful nomination process.
