Dobbs Ruling: A Crossroad for Abortion Rights

In response to recent reports that suggest an increase in the number of abortions since the fall of Roe v. Wade, anti-abortion advocates are doubling down on their efforts to restrict access to the procedure both at the state and federal level. Although there has been a surge in chemical abortions, proponents argue that state-level abortion restrictions have resulted in 32,000 more births during the first half of 2023.

Some key figures within the anti-abortion movement emphasize that, despite the increase in national abortions, states with stricter laws still see a decrease in the procedure. As the debate on abortion continues, both sides are looking ahead to November’s midterm elections, where several states will vote on abortion-related ballot measures.

While anti-abortion activists seek federal intervention to impose national restrictions on abortion, pro-choice advocates warn of a potential national ban should Republicans gain control over Congress and the presidency. With the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization last year, the power to regulate abortions has shifted back to the states, creating a patchwork of laws across the country.
