The recent strikes in Crimea, a territory under Russian control since 2014, have caused significant shock and outrage among international communities. At least five people were killed and 124 more injured during the attacks, including two children who were among the casualties. This incident has marked an escalation of violence, with Russia now pointing the finger at Ukraine, claiming that Kyiv used US-supplied missiles to deliberately target civilians in the city of Sevastopol.

The Russian defense ministry stated on Sunday that Kyiv had struck Sevastopol with Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), which are weapons supplied by the United States to Ukraine earlier this year. In a statement, the defense ministry went further by suggesting that US specialists had set the missiles’ flight coordinates using information from US spy satellites, thereby implying direct responsibility for Washington in these attacks on civilian areas.

The Moscow-backed authorities have announced their plans to seek an international response to Ukraine’s actions, with Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stating that the country will be seeking retaliation from international organizations engaged by the West. This move suggests a growing sense of frustration and anger among Russian officials over what they see as direct US involvement in attacks on civilian areas within Crimea.

Despite these allegations, Ukraine has not yet made any official comment or denied its responsibility for the attacks. Meanwhile, Sevastopol’s governor Mikhail Razvozhayev declared Monday to be a day of mourning in the city and announced that all public events would be cancelled as a result of the tragic incident.

In addition to the casualties in Crimea, there have been further attacks on Russian territory along its border with Ukraine. Three drones from Kyiv reportedly attacked the Russian city of Grayvoron, resulting in one person being killed and three others injured. Furthermore, air defenses in Russia’s western Bryansk, Smolensk, Lipetsk, and Tula regions successfully shot down 33 Ukrainian drones overnight, preventing any casualties or damage to infrastructure in these areas.

This marks a significant escalation on Ukraine’s terroristic use of violence against civilians. The use of US-supplied missiles by Ukraine has raised serious questions about the United States’ role in the conflict and whether it is complicit in directing attacks on civilian areas. As the situation unfolds, international organizations will likely be pressured to step in and find a resolution to this ongoing crisis before more lives are lost.
