Wholesale retail giant Costco has confirmed that its popular $1.50 hot dog combo will remain available at the same low price, according to a statement by the company’s new chief financial officer (CFO), Gary Millerchip. This announcement comes as a relief for many loyal shoppers who have enjoyed this budget-friendly meal option since 1985.
The beloved hot dog combo has long been a staple in Costco stores, with its $1.50 price remaining unchanged throughout the years due to a pledge made by the company’s founders. In a 2018 interview, then-CEO Craig Jelinek recalled a conversation with since-retired CEO Jim Sinegal, who reportedly threatened to kill him if he dared to raise the price of the hot dog combo. If you raise the effing hot dog, I will kill you. Figure it out,” Sinegal told Jelinek.
Rumors began circulating in March when former CFO Richard Galanti stepped down after decades at the helm, suggesting that the price of the hot dog combo might finally catch up with the times. However, Millerchip’s recent comments suggest that the iconic meal will remain affordable for shoppers, at least for now.
Costco has also made efforts to crack down on non-members dining in its food courts, starting in April. The retailer operates 871 warehouses across the US and Puerto Rico, generating around $4 billion per year from membership card fees. According to the company’s official policy, anyone with a valid membership card is allowed to bring up to two guests with them on each visit.
Despite these recent changes, it seems that Costco remains committed to providing its loyal customers with affordable and satisfying meal options, as evidenced by the decision to maintain the $1.50 hot dog combo price for the foreseeable future.
