House Speaker Johnson Accused of Betrayal by GOP Rep. Greene, Sparks Motion to Vacate Ahead of 2024 Election

House Speaker Mike Johnson Faces Motion to Vacate Amid Bipartisan Funding Bill Controversy

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican from Louisiana, is facing criticism from fellow party member Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who has filed a motion to vacate Speaker Johnson’s position. Greene accuses Johnson of betraying the confidence of the House GOP Conference by overseeing the passage of a bipartisan $1.2 trillion federal funding bill. This move aims to avoid a partial government shutdown.

Johnson assumed the role of House Speaker in late October after his predecessor was removed through a motion to vacate resolution. However, Greene’s recent motion raises concerns about his ability to lead the conference effectively. While Greene did not provide a specific timeline for the motion, she emphasized that it could happen at any time.

During the voting process for the funding bill, several House Republicans informed Digital that Greene had taken this significant step. Witnesses observed her signing a paper at the front of the chamber and handing it to House staff. Despite multiple requests for comment, Greene’s office has remained silent on the matter. On the other hand, Johnson’s office issued a statement affirming his commitment to conservative legislation that focuses on border security, national defense, and growing the Republican majority.

It is important to note that Greene’s motion to vacate does not automatically trigger a vote, as seen in the case of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s removal. A “privileged resolution” must be filed for House leaders to act on it within two legislative days. However, with Congress entering a two-week recess, any action on the motion is likely to be delayed.

A fourth GOP lawmaker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, indicated earlier that they believed Greene would file the motion. They suggested her motivation stemmed from feeling “burned by the base” of conservative voters after aligning herself with McCarthy. According to this lawmaker, Greene is attempting to redeem herself through this action.

During her remarks to reporters, Greene criticized Johnson for his support of the $1.2 trillion spending deal, describing it as a “dream and a wish list for Democrats and for the White House.” While Greene expressed respect for the Republican conference and her desire not to harm it, she emphasized the need for a thorough process to select a new Speaker who will stand with Republicans.

As the controversy unfolds, it remains to be seen how the House GOP Conference will respond to Greene’s motion and whether it will have any significant impact on Speaker Johnson’s position.
