While most of the protesters complied and left, around thirteen individuals chose to stay behind and were subsequently arrested by the USCP. Photos from the scene show one protester being escorted out of the rotunda by an officer, with the use of zipties to restrain those who resisted.
The arrested protesters have been charged with D.C. Code § 22–1307 – Crowding, Obstructing, or Incommoding. This incident highlights the growing animosity President Biden faces within his own party, as some Democrats are calling for a cease-fire in Gaza. Recent polling reveals a 17-point increase in support for Palestinians among Democrats since October, resulting in a starker divide within the party on the issue.
