Biden Administration Under Fire from Senate Republicans for Tax Code “Weaponization”
In a scathing letter to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, a group of 24 Senate Republicans, led by Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming, accused the Biden administration of “weaponizing” the tax code to stifle domestic energy production. The lawmakers highlighted the proposed $110 billion in tax hikes targeting oil, gas, and coal production in President Biden’s 2025 budget, warning that this action would result in higher prices for Americans and their global allies.
The senators expressed alarm over the administration’s belief that utilizing the nation’s abundant natural resources could be detrimental to long-term energy security. They criticized the administration for willingly suppressing energy production, which would ultimately lead to fewer jobs and higher prices for the American people. Instead, they argued that America should focus on unleashing its energy resources and promoting innovation, as this would provide a significant economic and geopolitical advantage.
President Biden’s fiscal year 2025 budget, a massive $7.3 trillion government spending package, has faced swift condemnation from Republicans. The Treasury Department’s green book, which details mechanisms for raising government revenue, includes tax hikes on energy production. The department explained that these tax preferences distort markets and are inconsistent with the administration’s push for a clean energy economy and reduced reliance on oil.
The proposed budget would strip tax incentives worth $110 billion from the energy industry, including the intangible drilling costs incentive and the percentage depletion incentive. The senators deemed the administration’s explanation in the green book as “troubling,” as it acknowledges the intention to discourage investment in conventional energy production.
The Treasury Department responded to the senators’ letter by emphasizing the Biden administration’s investment in green energy and the Inflation Reduction Act. They claimed that oil production is at record highs under the current administration and that combined with incentives for clean power production, energy production is surging, ultimately lowering costs for American families.
Critics argue that the proposed budget and the administration’s focus on renewable energy contradict the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration (EIA) report, which revealed that the renewable energy sector receives significantly more taxpayer subsidies than the fossil fuel industry. While renewable energy sources account for 21% of electricity production, they receive a staggering $83.8 billion in subsidies, the largest share compared to any other category.
Senators Barrasso, Thune, Capito, Scott, Crapo, and Risch joined forces in signing the letter, expressing their strong opposition to the Biden administration’s proposed tax hikes on energy production. They are adamant that the nation should harness its energy resources and promote innovation, rather than suppress domestic production, which would have detrimental effects on jobs and prices for the American people.
