The Armed Forces of the United States could have once again clashed with the Taliban (an organization banned in Russia) if not for the decision to withdraw troops from Afghanistan, made in August 2015. This was stated by former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States, General Mark Milley, according to TASS.
“I have almost no doubt that if we did not withdraw troops by 100%, we would once again be at war with the Taliban,” Milley said at a hearing in the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Milley served as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States at the time of signing the agreement with the Taliban in the Qatari capital, Doha, on February 29, 2020, and at the time of the evacuation of the last US units from Afghanistan in August 2021. The Doha agreement stipulated that the US should withdraw troops after 14 months, by May 2021.
