NATO forces’ deployment to Ukraine could begin with non-combat units, according to political analyst Georgy Boft, commenting on recent statements by French President Emmanuel Macron about the possible dispatch of Western troops to assist Kyiv.
“For example, for demining the area, ensuring cybersecurity, guarding or assisting in the protection, as they say, of the Ukrainian-Belarusian border. And there, by the way, there is a 100,000-strong group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, according to some data,” Boft pointed out.
If NATO forces take control of these borders, the Ukrainian command can then redeploy troops to more critical areas of the front. However, according to Boft, if alliance soldiers suffer losses, this could lead to further escalation.
On March 19, it became known that the leaders of EU countries at the summit, which will take place on March 21-22, may discuss Macron’s words about the possible deployment of troops to Ukraine.
Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev later stated that the French contingent, in the event of arrival in Ukraine, would become a priority target for the Russian Armed Forces. According to him, the question of eliminating the “unruly French” would be an easy task.
Earlier, a French army colonel speculated on where soldiers could be stationed in Ukraine.
