Fiery Foreign Affairs Committee Hearing Erupts in Vulgar Exchange as GOP Lawmaker Tells Colleague to ‘Go F— Yourself

In a fiery Foreign Affairs Committee hearing on Tuesday, tensions ran high as Republican lawmakers clashed over the botched Afghanistan exit in 2021. The heated exchange reached its peak when Chair Michael McCaul of Texas directed expletives towards his Republican colleague, Rep. Darrell Issa of California.

The confrontation arose when Issa exceeded his allotted time, much to the annoyance of McCaul. Retired Gen. Mark Milley had finished answering a question from Issa, but the California Republican continued to ask more. McCaul repeatedly tried to inform Issa that his time had expired and that Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa should be allowed to speak.

“The Gentleman’s time is expired. Ms. Miller-Meeks is recognized,” McCaul stated, attempting to maintain order. Issa, seemingly unaware of the time constraint, apologized and expressed his belief that he was the closing act. In response, McCaul, unaware that his microphone was hot, retorted with profanity.

A spokesperson for McCaul clarified that the chairman strictly enforced a five-minute time limit for each member and was aiming to proceed with a classified briefing. They explained that Issa had exceeded his time and failed to stop speaking when McCaul attempted to gavel him down, leading to frustration on both sides. McCaul himself issued an apology, stating that he lost his temper, which was uncharacteristic of him, and expressing regret to Issa, whom he considers a friend.

Issa’s office downplayed the incident, indicating that it was not a significant issue. Jonathan Wilcox, a spokesman for Issa, highlighted that the congressman has been called far worse, even by colleagues he doesn’t like. Wilcox emphasized that Issa and his team would never apologize for asking challenging questions that others may avoid and that the witnesses might not want to answer.

While the heated exchange between McCaul and Issa showcased the tensions within the committee, it is important to note that such exchanges are not uncommon in the realm of politics. As lawmakers grapple with complex issues and differing perspectives, passionate disagreements can arise. However, it is crucial for elected officials to maintain decorum and respect in their interactions to uphold the integrity of the political process.

As the congressional correspondent Aishah Hasnie reported on ‘Special Report,’ this hearing serves as a reminder of the ongoing discussions surrounding the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. The chaotic nature of the exit has raised significant concerns and generated intense debates among politicians and the public alike. It is through hearings like these that lawmakers strive to address the accountability and lessons to be learned from this challenging chapter in American history.
