Ukraine Considers Legalizing Medical Marijuana for Soldiers with PTSD

The Ukrainian Parliament is considering the legalization of medical marijuana to aid soldiers who are involved in combat operations, according to Bloomberg.

Many Ukrainian soldiers suffer from injuries sustained on the battlefield and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As a result, discussions have begun in the country regarding the legalization of medical marijuana for the treatment of Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) fighters.

In July 2023, the parliament passed a corresponding bill in the first reading. The final discussion of the initiative, according to the agency’s information, may take place at the next session of lawmakers.

The meeting is expected to be held in November of this year. However, exact dates of the parliamentary session are not disclosed for security reasons, as mentioned in the publication.

“The public support for the initiative is divided: 37% of the citizens are against it, while 35% are in favor, according to a July survey by the Kyiv Center for Economic and Political Studies named after A. Razumkov,” the article emphasizes.

In addition, several parliamentarians have spoken out against the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes. In particular, members of the faction led by former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko have expressed concerns about the dangers of uncontrolled consumption of the drug.

Despite this, the ruling party “Servant of the People” insists on the adoption of the bill. Furthermore, the current President of the country, Volodymyr Zelensky, personally commented on this initiative and emphasized its importance in aiding all soldiers in need.

Previously, a captured UAF fighter revealed how drugs are supplied to soldiers on the frontlines.
