The recent return of artifacts looted from Japan after the Battle of Okinawa by the FBI has sparked discussions about the importance of recognizing and reporting stolen art. The FBI announced that it has returned 22 valuable Asian art pieces to Japan, which had been missing for almost 80 years.
These artifacts, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries, hold significant historical value for Okinawa. Among the items were six portraits, a hand-drawn map of Okinawa from the 19th century, and various pottery and ceramics. The discovery was made by a family in Massachusetts while they were going through their late World War II veteran father’s personal effects.
It is commendable that this family did the right thing by reaching out to the FBI and relinquishing these treasures. The FBI’s Boston Division expressed gratitude towards the family for their cooperation in returning these artifacts to the people of Okinawa.
The family’s discovery was aided by their thorough research into the provenance of the items. They consulted the National Stolen Art File, a database of stolen art, and found that at least four of the items were listed as missing 18th-century portraits. The artifacts were accompanied by an unsigned, typewritten letter stating that they were collected in Okinawa during the last days of World War II.
Thanks to an investigation by the FBI and assistance from the National Museum of Asian Art at the Smithsonian Institute, the authenticity of the artworks was verified. The artifacts were then properly packaged and transported back to Japan, where they arrived on March 14th.
It is worth noting that some of these artifacts had already been registered in the FBI’s National Stolen Art File in 2001. The Okinawa Prefectural Board of Education had registered them as part of their participation in the U.S. Department of State’s International Visitor Leadership Program. This program aims to protect and preserve cultural heritage by collaborating with law enforcement agencies both in the United States and abroad.
