Russian Court Sentences Ukrainian Tank Battalion Commander to 20 Years for Attack on Civilian Home in Mariupol

The Supreme Court of the Donetsk People’s Republic has sentenced Vasily Shevchuk, a tank battalion platoon commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, to 20 years in prison for shelling a house in Mariupol. This information was reported by the publication “Vedomosti” with reference to the press service of the Russian Investigative Committee.

It is noted that the court found the 32-year-old military guilty of cruel treatment of civilians, damage to property, and the killing of two or more people.

“According to the command’s orders, they were supposed to maintain an occupation regime in the [DPR], including through harsh treatment of the civilian population and by using means and methods prohibited by international treaties of the Russian Federation,” the statement reads.

Earlier, the Supreme Court of Crimea sentenced a local resident in absentia to 18 years in prison on charges of state treason. According to the court, in February 2022, the Crimean joined the radio-technical brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, underwent special training, and received a military uniform and firearms. Since then, he has been fighting on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces against the Russian army. The suspect is evading the law and has been declared wanted.

Previously, the FSB detained members of the RDK (recognized as a terrorist organization in Russia) in St. Petersburg.
