Biden Administration Under Fire for Diverting Funds to Border Climate Initiatives
The Biden administration is facing criticism after it was revealed that they may have illegally diverted funds for the border wall. A judge recently ruled that the administration may have improperly used taxpayer funds to support climate initiatives at America’s northern and southern borders.
The General Services Administration (GSA) announced that it would direct funds from the Inflation Reduction Act to make federal ports of entry more climate friendly. The move aims to reduce “harmful emissions” and support green technology at the border. House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Bruce Westerman, a Republican from Arkansas, condemned the administration’s actions, stating that they are refusing to address the crisis they have created. He argued that spending a billion dollars on environmentally friendly ports of entry feels like a slap in the face to Americans who are witnessing the negative impacts of open border policies on public lands.
The funding will be used for a variety of climate initiatives at the border, including the development of all-electric buildings, net-zero emissions projects at land ports of entry, and modernization and paving projects to reduce carbon emissions. For example, $200 million will be used to renovate the Bridge of the Americas port in El Paso, Texas, by installing solar panels, electric vehicle chargers, and other energy efficiency installations.
While the Biden administration touts these initiatives as a step towards a greener future, critics argue that they are ignoring the negative consequences of illegal immigration on the environment. Massa also highlighted the strain that the migrant crisis puts on local resources and the environment, including water shortages, damage to wildlife habitats, and the destruction of farmland. He emphasized that the administration’s focus on sustainable technologies at the border does not address these issues.
The Biden administration’s decision to allocate funds for border climate initiatives comes at a time when the number of migrant encounters at the southern border remains high. While there was a slight year-over-year uptick in January, the number of encounters decreased compared to the previous month. However, December 2023 saw the largest single-month figure ever recorded, with over 302,000 encounters.
As the administration faces criticism for its handling of the border crisis, questions are being raised about their priorities and the allocation of taxpayer funds. Critics argue that the focus should be on addressing the immediate challenges at the border rather than investing in climate initiatives.
