Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Sends Troopers and National Guardsmen to Intercept Vessel with Haitian Migrants, Firearms, and Drugs

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced on Friday that state law enforcement had intercepted a vessel headed towards the Florida coast carrying Haitian migrants, along with firearms, drugs, and night vision gear. The interception took place near the Sebastian Inlet, and the illegal immigrants were subsequently turned over to the Coast Guard for deportation. This incident occurred in the midst of increased personnel and aircraft deployment to the Florida coast due to unrest in Haiti and the potential for a surge in migration from the conflict-hit nation.

Governor DeSantis held a press conference where he signed three pieces of legislation aimed at deterring illegal immigration into Florida. With the escalation of violence and the takeover of the capital by gangs in Haiti, DeSantis expressed concerns about the potential for an influx of migrants via the sea. In response, Florida has deployed additional National Guardsmen, helicopters, officers from various law enforcement agencies, and seacraft to enhance border security.

This recent deployment is part of an ongoing effort to address the issue of illegal immigration. Governor DeSantis emphasized that since January 2023, officials have assisted the Coast Guard in intercepting 670 vessels carrying over 13,500 illegal immigrants. He warned potential migrants that attempting to reach Florida by boat is a hazardous journey, and the most likely outcome is being stopped and returned to their country of origin.

The Department of Homeland Security and the Pentagon are also monitoring the situation, acknowledging the possibility of increased migration from Haiti. However, they have stated that migration flows in the Caribbean remain relatively low. The U.S. policy is to return noncitizens who do not have a legitimate basis to enter the country, and those intercepted at sea are subject to immediate repatriation.

In conjunction with the increased enforcement measures, Governor DeSantis signed three immigration-related bills. One bill increases the maximum sentence for driving without a license, while another enhances penalties for crimes committed by illegal immigrants who have been deported and return to the country. The third bill prohibits jurisdictions from recognizing IDs distributed by other states to illegal immigrants.

The actions taken by Governor DeSantis and the state law enforcement agencies reflect their commitment to protecting the people of Florida and maintaining border security. Despite the ongoing challenges, the state remains resolute in its efforts to deter illegal immigration and ensure the safety of its residents.
