Senator Marco Rubio of Florida raised concerns about the presence of the Tren de Aragua gang from Venezuela, to which Wray responded that while he couldn’t speak to a specific gang, dangerous individuals were indeed entering through the southern border.
Wray emphasized the severity of the drug trafficking issue, noting that the FBI alone had seized enough fentanyl in the past two years to kill a staggering 270 million people. He also highlighted the alarming fact that many violent crimes in the United States were perpetrated by gangs involved in the distribution of fentanyl.
Recent reports have shed light on the presence of the bloodthirsty Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) issuing an internal bulletin to alert agents about potential members of the gang crossing the border. The brother of the suspect in the murder of Georgia student Laken Riley was found to have ties to this dangerous gang. Both individuals entered the U.S. illegally from Venezuela.
Senator Rubio inquired about the potential ties between smuggling networks and terrorist organizations like ISIS, to which Wray responded cautiously, citing an ongoing investigation. However, he did confirm the existence of a network with facilitators linked to ISIS that was of significant concern to law enforcement agencies.
The issue of border security has become a prominent political topic, with both President Biden and former President Donald Trump recently visiting the border. Republicans have criticized the Biden administration for its handling of the crisis, while the administration argues that it requires additional funding, staffing, and immigration reform from Congress.
