Russian Military Aircraft Il-112 to be Upgraded to Il-212 for Increased Cargo Capacity, Expert Reports

The Russian Ministry of Defense has announced plans to modify the Il-112 military transport aircraft into a more capable Il-212 to meet the needs of the Russian army. This decision comes after the start of a special military operation, which has prompted the Ministry of Defense to adjust its requirements. According to aviation expert Roman Gusarov, the current payload capacity of five tons offered by the Il-112 is insufficient for the tasks at hand.

Gusarov explained that despite having a relatively large fuselage, the Il-112 is unable to transport heavy equipment such as armored personnel carriers (BTRs) due to its limited payload capacity.

The plans for the development of the Il-212, a more capable transport aircraft, were announced in late 2023. It is expected to replace the aging An-26 and An-72 aircraft in the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS). The Il-112 will serve as the basis for the Il-212, which will feature turbojet engines and a wing-mounted engine configuration similar to the An-72. This design choice will allow for increased climb rate and enable the aircraft to operate from unprepared runways and dirt airstrips.

On March 5th, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu stated during a meeting that the production of a prototype Il-212 aircraft is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Defense received the new Il-76MD-90A military transport aircraft, further enhancing the country’s military capabilities.
