Sudan’s Ramadan Ceasefire Impossible Without Compliance from Rapid Reaction Forces – Tensions Escalate

Ceasefire in Sudan Impossible Even During Holy Month of Ramadan, According to Sudanese Army

The prospects for a ceasefire in Sudan during the holy month of Ramadan seem unlikely, as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have failed to uphold the agreements reached in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia in 2023. This statement was made by the Sudanese army, as reported by TASS.

“There will be no ceasefire during Ramadan. It is only possible if the rebels [RSF] fulfill the conditions of the agreement…and abandon residential homes and civilian structures,” the military statement said.

The conflict between the Sudan Armed Forces, led by the de facto head of the country and army commander, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the RSF commander, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemetti, entered an open phase on the morning of April 15, 2023. The conflict has already resulted in extensive destruction, a healthcare system crisis, and the displacement of tens of thousands of people from the country.

On March 6, it was announced that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had sent troops to Sudan in 2023 to participate in the conflict.

Earlier, the RSF had expressed readiness to cease fire.
