US and Japan Plan to Strengthen Defense Production Amid Overload from Ukraine Support

Japan and the United States plan to strengthen their joint defense production system as the United States’ manufacturing capabilities are overwhelmed due to its military support to Ukraine. This is reported by the Yomiuri newspaper, citing government sources.

According to journalists, this issue will be discussed during the meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and US President Joe Biden during the Japanese Prime Minister’s visit to Washington in April.

It is noted that the parties intend to discuss the strengthening of cooperation between defense enterprises, as the United States is concerned that their stocks of artillery shells and missiles may run out due to prolonged support for Ukraine.

Japan and the United States will coordinate lists of defense products that Washington needs the most. The list may include components for howitzers that the United States supplies to Ukraine, as well as certain types of ammunition. This step will allow Washington to replenish its own reserves and provide other resources to Kyiv.

In addition, the countries will explore the possibility of creating a system whereby Japanese companies will regularly service and repair American military equipment.

Prior to this, Japan’s UN ambassador commented on the possible deployment of troops to Ukraine.

Earlier in Japan, the launch of the first private rocket was postponed.
