Republican South Carolina Rep. William Timmons is facing criticism after videos resurfaced showing his support for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in Congress. In a hearing titled “Recruiting, Empowering and Retaining a Diverse Congressional Staff,” Timmons expressed his commitment to making staff retention and diversity a top priority. He emphasized the need for Congress and its members’ offices to accurately reflect the communities they represent.
Timmons argued that DEI should influence the hiring process in Congressional offices, stating that “every member’s office should be representative of the people they represent.” He called for diversity based on race, gender, geography, socioeconomic background, lifestyle, and proportional representation based on the population they represent.
However, following the resurfaced videos, Timmons claimed that the clips were selectively edited and taken out of context. He emphasized that his support for diversity in Congress should not be confused with implementing quotas. Timmons stated that he has always advocated for hiring based on ability and opposes the radical left’s “woke agenda.” He referred to DEI as anti-American and criticized its association with former Speaker Pelosi and woke Democrats.
Timmons’ opponent, South Carolina State Representative Adam Morgan, condemned his apparent support for DEI, calling it “appalling” and “anti-American.” Morgan expressed his opposition to what he views as leftist indoctrination and discriminatory practices, contrasting himself as someone who works against the left.
The controversy surrounding Timmons’ support for DEI highlights the ongoing debates within the Republican party regarding diversity and inclusion. While Timmons argues for a diverse workforce that accurately represents constituents, critics view his stance as aligning with the left’s agenda.
