Trump Tightens His Grip: Former President Takes Control of RNC, Vows to Win Bigly in 2024

The Republican Party has once again found itself firmly under the control of former President Donald Trump. During a recently planned general session, Trump’s chosen candidates for the chair and co-chair of the Republican National Committee (RNC) were unanimously confirmed by voice votes. Michael Whatley, a Trump ally and the chair of the North Carolina GOP, will serve as chair, while Lara Trump, the former president’s daughter-in-law, will be the co-chair. Both emphasized their commitment to working closely with Trump in the upcoming months.

This change in leadership comes after Trump repeatedly called for changes within the committee, citing lackluster fundraising and his opposition to the RNC’s handling of the presidential primary debates. Ronna McDaniel, the former chair, stepped down, highlighting the RNC’s strong financial position and the success of its fundraising efforts. Moving forward, the RNC aims to focus on both fundraising and election integrity programs to compete with the Democratic National Committee and President Biden’s campaign.

Whatley, a vocal supporter of Trump’s claims of widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, stressed the importance of protecting the sanctity of the vote. He pledged to expand the RNC’s election integrity program and work closely with McDaniel, who played a key role in its development. Additionally, Trump appointed campaign adviser Chris LaCivita as the RNC’s chief of staff, ensuring continued coordination between the committee and Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.

The RNC gathering coincided with Trump’s sweeping victories in 14 out of 15 GOP primaries and caucuses on Super Tuesday, bringing him closer to securing the Republican nomination for the 2024 presidential race. With former U.N. ambassador Nikki Haley dropping out of the race, Trump is now considered the presumptive nominee. This shift in leadership at the RNC is seen by many as a natural progression as the party’s focus shifts from the primaries to the general election.

While Trump’s control over the RNC is not without controversy, it follows a long-standing tradition for the presumptive nominee to take charge and merge operations as the election cycle progresses. Republican National Committee member Henry Barbour of Mississippi emphasized the importance of party unity and expressed support for Trump’s leadership. He also confirmed that the RNC will not be using its funds to cover Trump’s legal bills, despite concerns that arose due to the former president’s ongoing legal battles.

As the 2024 campaign heats up, the Republican Party is rallying behind Trump’s leadership, aiming to secure victories not only in the presidential race but also in the Senate, House, and local elections. With a renewed focus on fundraising and election integrity, the RNC is positioning itself to be a formidable force in the upcoming elections.
