Canada Joins Coalition to Develop Drones for Ukrainian Defense, Raises Concerns of Future Military Involvement

Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair has announced that Ottawa will join the coalition for the development of drones in the contact group for the defense of Ukraine. The minister’s statement was published on the Canadian government’s website.

“For the further development of drone capabilities in Ukraine, Minister Blair has promised that Canada will join the coalition for drone capabilities in the contact group for the defense of Ukraine,” the text says.

The coalition is led by Latvia and the United Kingdom.

It is noted that Ottawa has already provided Kiev with over 100 specialized cameras for drones from L3 Wescam, and plans to provide more than 800 drones produced by Teledyne FLIR.

Yesterday, Blair stated that Canadian instructors have trained over 40,000 soldiers and officers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces since 2015. According to him, Ukrainian military personnel were trained in tactics, troop management, and demining. The minister also noted that his country “will support Ukraine as much as necessary.”

Earlier, it became known that the Canadian government will provide trainers and aircraft to train Ukrainian pilots in flying lightweight fighter-bombers F-16.
