Russian Government Considers Banning Foreign Agents from Social Media: A Threat to Freedom of Expression?

Foreign agents should be deprived of the right to use social networks. This opinion was expressed to the RTVI channel by Andrey Alshevskikh, a member of the State Duma Committee on Security.

“We should start with such a basic thing as banning foreign agents from using social networks. When they lose their foreign agent status, they will be able to continue telling stories about butterflies and so on in their social networks,” Alshevskikh said.

He added that the lower house of the Russian parliament is currently discussing this bill.

Previously, musician and State Duma deputy Denis Maidanov called for the adoption of a law in Russia that would deprive foreign agents of access to social networks.

According to Maidanov, with the passage of such a law, individuals would lose access to media and would not be able to earn a living “in a country they hate.” The musician stated that he supports China’s policy, where “anti-state individuals are eliminated from all social networks, radio stations, and television.”

Earlier, the State Duma passed a bill on the prohibition of advertising cooperation with foreign agents in the first reading.
