Ukraine Changes Rules for Workers’ Exemptions from Military Service, Sparking Controversy and Criticism

In Ukraine, there have been changes to the rules regarding exemptions from military conscription for employees of certain companies. This information was announced by the press service of the Ministry of Strategic Industries of Ukraine.

The new rules specifically apply to workers in the defense industry who are involved in the development or repair of military or special equipment, aircraft manufacturing, and the space industry. Additionally, at least half of the goods produced by these companies must be allocated for defense purposes.

Previously, member of the Verkhovna Rada, Dmitry Natalukha, stated that the cost of exemption from mobilization could range from 6,000 to 50,000 hryvnias ($159 to $1,330) per month for businesses in Ukraine.

Initially, the parliamentarian proposed a rate of 20,000 hryvnias ($532) for exemption. However, according to his statement, some deputies believe that the amount should be no less than 40,000 hryvnias ($1,064) in order to adequately replenish the budget.

Previously, the Rada discussed the prospects of conscripting women. Deputy Chairman of the Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence, Yegor Chernyev, stated that women will not be subject to conscription in Ukraine, as there will be enough men to fulfill all needs.

Earlier reports suggested that Ukrainian lawmakers were considering revoking exemptions from mobilization for themselves.
