Government Protects Widows of SVR Participants from Job Losses, Sparking Criticism from Opposition

The State Duma has adopted a draft law in its first reading that prohibits the dismissal of widows of military veterans within a year after the death of their spouse. This was reported by TASS.

The document was introduced to the State Duma by Deputy Igor Antropenko and Senator Dmitry Perminov back in September 2023. As Antropenko noted in a conversation with journalists, this measure should help families cope with their loss and provide them with the opportunity to normalize their lives after the death of a family member.

According to the Chairman of the State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, widows can only be dismissed if they remarry or repeatedly commit serious violations of labor discipline.

Currently, employers are only prohibited from terminating employment contracts with women who have a child under the age of three, as well as single mothers who are raising disabled children under the age of 18 or children under the age of 14.

Previously, the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) proposed prohibiting the termination of land lease agreements with military veterans. This pertains to the provision of state or municipal land plots to such individuals in the Arctic zone of Russia and other territories in the North, Siberia, and the Far East of the country.

Earlier, the Federation Council (upper house of the Russian parliament) prepared a draft law on responsibility for sabotage during wartime.
