Clinton’s comments seemed to be directed at NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who has expressed confidence in the United States remaining a committed ally regardless of the election outcome. While Stoltenberg expressed concerns over Trump’s remarks, they did prompt member countries to confirm their contributions to NATO. Currently, 18 out of 31 alliance members are on track to meet their pledges of contributing 2% of their GDP to the group. This year, European states are projected to contribute $380 billion, with Germany meeting its 2% pledge for the first time since the Cold War. This signifies a significant improvement compared to previous years, where only 11 NATO allies met their spending pledges.
