Tragedy struck in California’s Mojave Desert on Friday night as a helicopter crash claimed the lives of six individuals, including Herbert Wigwe, the CEO of Access Bank Group, one of Nigeria’s major banks. The news of Wigwe’s death was confirmed by Nigerian officials, including World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. Also among the victims was Abimbola Ogunbanjo, a former Group Chairman of Nigerian Exchange Group. Nigerian politician Godwin Obaseki reported that Wigwe’s wife and son were among the decedents as well.
The helicopter had departed from Palm Springs Airport and was en route to Boulder City, Nevada, near Las Vegas, when the crash occurred near Nipton, California. The area was experiencing rainy and snowy weather conditions at the time. The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) are currently investigating the incident.
Governor Obaseki expressed his shock and devastation over the tragic loss of Herbert Wigwe, describing him as a visionary leader who propelled Access Bank to international prominence. Wigwe’s contributions to Nigeria’s financial sector have been widely recognized, and his passing is mourned by the nation. Obaseki extended his condolences to the Wigwe family, the Ogunbanjo family, Access Bank Holding, the Nigeria Stock Exchange, friends, and associates affected by this irreparable loss.
