Woman Found Guilty Except for Insanity After Shoving Child onto Train Tracks in Portland

An Oregon woman who was caught on video pushing a 3-year-old child onto train tracks in December 2022 has been found guilty except for insanity, prosecutors said Wednesday. Brianna Lace Workman, 33, has been ordered to be placed under the jurisdiction of the Psychiatric Security Review Board (PSRB) for care, custody, and treatment for a maximum of 10 years, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney.

The incident occurred at the Gateway Transit Center in Portland, where the child and their mother were waiting on the platform. Surveillance video released by the district attorney’s office showed the suspect, Workman, jumping up from a bench and pushing the child, who was standing in front of her, onto the MAX train tracks without provocation.

Fortunately, a bystander quickly jumped down to rescue the child before a train arrived. The child suffered a severe headache and a red mark on their forehead from hitting their face on the track. Workman has been convicted on charges of attempted assault in the first degree, assault in the third degree, interfering with public transportation, disorderly conduct in the second degree, and recklessly endangering another person.

As part of the verdict, Workman will be transported to the custody of the Oregon State Hospital under the jurisdiction of the PSRB. The purpose is to ensure her care, custody, and treatment for a maximum of 10 years.

The incident highlights the shocking act of violence committed by Workman and the potential danger faced by innocent bystanders. The video evidence, which has circulated widely, serves as a reminder of the importance of public safety and the need for swift justice in such cases.

While this particular incident is an isolated event, it underscores the importance of maintaining vigilance and ensuring the safety of individuals in public spaces. Authorities must continue to prioritize the well-being and security of citizens, especially in crowded areas like transit centers.

It is crucial for communities to come together and support one another in times of distress. Acts of violence like this remind us of the need for compassion and empathy. By promoting a safe and caring environment, society can work towards preventing such incidents and protecting vulnerable individuals, particularly children.

The case of Brianna Lace Workman serves as a stark reminder that mental health issues can have severe consequences and require appropriate intervention and treatment. It is essential for society to address mental health concerns and provide the necessary support to individuals in need.

In conclusion, the conviction of Brianna Lace Workman for pushing a child onto train tracks in Portland sends a strong message about the consequences of such actions. It is a reminder of the importance of public safety, the need for swift justice, and the significance of addressing mental health issues within our communities.
