U.S. congressional candidate Mayra Flores has announced a significant fundraising success in her campaign to flip a Democrat-held congressional district along the U.S.-Mexico border. Flores, a conservative Hispanic community leader, revealed that she raised over $970,000 from 16,617 unique donors in all 50 states during the fourth quarter of 2023. The former Republican Rep., who briefly represented Texas’ 34th Congressional District from 2022-2023, aims to tackle the border crisis and address illegal immigration, which she believes are the result of failed Democratic policies under President Joe Biden’s administration.
Flores expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming support her campaign has received, emphasizing that voters across the Rio Grande Valley and the country recognize the dire situation at the southern border. Holding Biden and Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez responsible, she stated, “Our southern border is a disaster, illegal immigration is out of control, and Democrats like Joe Biden and Vicente Gonzalez are solely to blame.” Flores is committed to securing the border, lowering costs for families, improving education and healthcare, and restoring the country’s greatness.
Although Flores initially won a special election in June 2022, becoming the first Republican to do so in the traditionally Democrat-leaning majority Hispanic region, she lost her seat later that year due to redistricting following the 2020 Census. Forced to run against incumbent Democrat Rep. Vicente Gonzalez in the 2022 midterm elections, Flores aims to challenge Gonzalez again in the upcoming election. She remains vocal about the border crisis and the neglect of the Hispanic community in South Texas by the Democratic Party.
In the Republican Primary, Flores faces competition from other candidates, including oncologist and former Democrat Dr. Laura Cisneros, former congressional candidate Mauro Garza, and Gregory Kunkle, Jr. While elections analysts currently favor the Democrats in the race, no significant polling data has been released.
