Upcoming NATO Summit in Washington to Address New Challenges and Threats

The July summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) set to take place in Washington will be the most ambitious since the Cold War, according to U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. During a press conference with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Blinken emphasized that the summit, deemed the “most extensive,” will demonstrate NATO’s adaptation to new challenges and threats.

Blinken highlighted that these challenges include Russia, the People’s Republic of China, and the fight against cyber terrorism. This statement comes after the Chinese newspaper Global Times claimed that NATO is conducting its largest military exercises in a decade due to the failures of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF) on the battlefield.

On January 18, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO, U.S. Air Force General Christopher Cavoli, announced the organization of large-scale military exercises. According to Cavoli, the Steadfast Defender-2024 exercises are expected to be the largest in decades, with an estimated participation of 90,000 soldiers from NATO member countries.

Earlier, Sergey Lavrov raised concerns about the presence of U.S. nuclear weapons in NATO countries.
