A 63-year-old hiker from San Diego, California, tragically passed away from a cardiac arrest while on a trail in Zion National Park, according to park rangers. The incident occurred near the park’s Scout Lookout, and the National Park Service (NPS) was alerted on Friday afternoon. Rangers immediately responded, equipped with medical equipment including an automated external defibrillator (AED) and a heart monitor.
Upon arriving at the scene, emergency crews found park visitors performing CPR and other lifesaving measures. Despite their efforts, the hiker could not be saved. More than 20 workers, including paramedics and EMTs, were involved in the response.
After nearly an hour and a half of administering CPR, using the AED, and monitoring the hiker’s condition, the park consulted with a doctor and pronounced the individual dead. The NPS is currently investigating the incident, with assistance from Utah’s Office of the Medical Examiner and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
In response to the tragedy, the park temporarily closed its West Rim Trail but later reopened it. Zion National Park superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh expressed his condolences to the hiker’s family and gratitude to the bystanders who assisted in performing CPR.
The loss of life is a somber reminder of the risks associated with outdoor activities. Visitors to national parks are urged to take necessary precautions and be aware of their physical limitations to ensure their safety.
