Squatters Claim Sovereign Citizenship and Engage in Illegal Activities in Arkansas

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office is taking action to remove derelict boats off its coast after they became targets for squatters. These squatters, who identify as part of a sovereign citizen group, have been known to engage in violent confrontations with law enforcement. The investigation into the squatters began in August 2023, according to Sharp County Sheriff Shane Russell.

Authorities were alerted to a couple who had moved into an RV and an “enclosed property” owned by someone else. The pair went as far as building a permanent structure, installing solar panels, and storing large amounts of water. Despite receiving multiple eviction notices, the squatters, who claimed to be members of the Moorish National Republic, refused to leave.

The Moorish National Republic has had conflicts with federal and state authorities due to their refusal to abide by laws and government regulations, as reported by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Eventually, on January 25, law enforcement executed a search warrant and arrested the two individuals without incident. The male suspect identified himself as Saleem Yosiyah YisraEl.

During the investigation, it was discovered that the squatters had been conducting illegal scams involving the Postal Service and several thousand dollars of Iraqi currency. The FBI is now investigating these alleged fraudulent activities and cybercrimes.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement agencies have taken swift action to address the issue of squatters claiming sovereign citizenship and engaging in illegal activities. This case serves as a reminder of the challenges faced by authorities in dealing with such groups.
