Russia Plans to Establish Military Base in the Central African Republic

The number of Russian soldiers to be deployed to the planned military base in the Central African Republic (CAR) remains unknown, according to Russian Ambassador Alexander Bikantov. In ongoing discussions between Moscow and Bangui, both parties have yet to determine how many Russian fighters will be sent to the CAR and for how long.

“At present, a location for the Russian servicemen is being selected,” added Bikantov.

The ambassador also highlighted the positive impact that the establishment of the Russian military base would have on the security situation in the CAR. He stated that implementing this initiative would strengthen the foundation for protecting the nation’s sovereignty.

Furthermore, the diplomat mentioned the support measures provided by the Russian leadership to the CAR army. He clarified that Moscow had handed over seven L-39 Aero training and combat aircraft to Bangui in 2023. It is expected that these aircraft will facilitate the process of creating a new separate branch of the military, the army aviation, within the Armed Forces of the republic.

Previously, the CAR had assessed the possibility of joining BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa).
