Investigation Reveals White House Pharmacy Wasted $750,000 in Taxpayer Money

In a recent report by the Department of Defense’s independent Office of the Inspector General, it has been revealed that a little-known in-house pharmacy at the White House has been involved in improper practices, wasting $750,000 in taxpayer money. The report, which covers activity from the Trump administration through early 2020, sheds light on the pharmacy’s negligent handling of prescription medications and its failure to verify patient identities.

According to the report, the White House “pharmacy” dispensed controlled medications such as Ambien and Provigil without proper verification. Shockingly, a former pharmacy staff member disclosed that a doctor had once asked if the staffer could provide a controlled substance as a parting gift for leaving the White House. This raises serious concerns about the integrity and regulation of the pharmacy’s operations.

Furthermore, the investigation found that the “pharmacy” allowed individuals to grab over-the-counter medicines from open bins, a practice that is highly irregular and potentially dangerous. The report also revealed that a larger affiliate of the office provided care to personnel who were not eligible, resulting in over $750,000 in wasted taxpayer funds over three years. The lack of proper record-keeping and reliance on handwritten notes further complicates the accurate assessment of the financial loss.

Experts in the field have expressed their dismay at the pharmacy’s practices. Douglas Hoey, CEO of the National Community Pharmacists Association, pointed out that if this had been a traditional pharmacy, it would have faced severe consequences from the state board of pharmacy, possibly even being shut down.

The investigation was prompted by internal complaints received by the Department of Defense in 2018 regarding improper medical practices by a senior military medical officer. Although the report focuses on the Trump administration, investigators also interviewed staffers who worked there during former President Obama’s tenure.

This revelation raises questions about the oversight and accountability of the White House Military Office and its associated medical unit. The mishandling of prescription medications and the wasteful use of taxpayer money warrant a thorough investigation and a reevaluation of the pharmacy’s operations.

As this story unfolds, it highlights the need for stricter regulations and oversight within the government, particularly when it comes to healthcare practices. The taxpayers deserve better management of their funds and assurance that their health and safety are prioritized.
