The NYPD has taken action against the use of unlicensed mopeds by illegal migrants in New York City. In a recent crackdown, the police department confiscated 80 such vehicles that were parked outside migrant shelters in Manhattan. The Roosevelt and Watson Hotels, which have been converted into shelters, were found to have lines of mopeds parked outside. This move comes in response to long-standing complaints from New Yorkers about these illegal migrants using mopeds to navigate the city, often disregarding traffic rules by driving in the opposite direction on streets, sidewalks, and even bicycle lanes.
Many of these migrants rely on mopeds for food delivery work since they are unable to find other jobs without work permits. However, a majority of the mopeds seen outside the shelter hotels are unregistered and lack license plates. According to New York law, all mopeds must be registered and insured, and unlicensed mopeds cannot be insured. Additionally, drivers are required to wear helmets.
Responding to public concerns, the NYPD collaborated with officers from NYPD Midtown South and NYPD Midtown North, as well as the New York City Department of Sanitation, to address the issue. They successfully removed 80 vehicles, aiming to alleviate the problem.
Some migrants have defended their use of mopeds, stating that limited options force them to resort to this means of transportation. Food delivery work does not require a license, but local residents have expressed their discontent, describing the mopeds as a “canker sore” in the neighborhood.
While many delivery apps require drivers to submit a license, some migrants bypass this requirement by using apps designed for bicycle deliveries. This allows them to earn as much as $1,500 every two weeks, according to a Venezuelan migrant residing in the Roosevelt Hotel.
New York City is currently home to approximately 69,000 illegal migrants, with over 160,000 arriving since mid-2022. The influx includes migrants bused in by Texas Governor Greg Abbott. In response to the crisis, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed allocating $2.4 billion of taxpayer money to the city. Mayor Eric Adams predicts that the crisis will cost the city at least $12 billion by the end of FY 2025.
It is worth noting that in September, the Biden administration expedited work authorization and deportation protection for around 470,000 Venezuelan migrants.
