Tragic Sledding Accident Claims Life of 13-Year-Old Iowa Boy

A 13-year-old boy from Iowa, Adam McWherter, tragically lost his life after a sledding accident earlier this month. Reports state that Adam suffered critical injuries when he crossed into the path of an SUV while sledding downhill on Buffalo Road in Anamosa. The accident occurred on a day when schools were canceled due to a snowstorm on January 10.

According to a GoFundMe page set up for Adam’s family, he and a friend decided to go sledding down his driveway. Unfortunately, Adam “got going too fast and shot out into the road” just as an SUV was passing by. The impact instantly knocked him unconscious and resulted in multiple broken bones and other injuries.

Adam was immediately rushed to the University of Iowa’s Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away on Saturday, 10 days after the accident.

Adam’s 11-year-old friend, who was sledding with him, informed authorities that he had tried to warn Adam about the oncoming car by jumping off his sled. However, Adam was unable to see the vehicle until he was already on the street.

The driver of the SUV, a 49-year-old, stated that he did not see the boy until moments before the incident occurred. Despite slamming on the brakes, he was unable to stop in time. Currently, no charges have been filed, but the investigation is ongoing.

Anamosa, where the accident took place, is a city located approximately 25 miles northeast of Cedar Rapids in Iowa.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety precautions while engaging in winter activities. With winter storms affecting various parts of the United States, it is crucial for individuals to be vigilant and exercise caution to prevent such accidents from occurring.
