Texas Bus Companies Sue Sanctuary City of Chicago Over Housing Migrants

FOX Business’ Kelly Saberi reports on Texas bus companies suing the sanctuary city of Chicago. A suburban lawmaker outside Chicago proposed that residents be able to sign up to host migrants in their homes, noting that, “We do have a very affluent community.”

Naperville, Illinois, Councilman Josh McBroom voiced the notion during a city council meeting last week, and a conservative account reacted to the clip on X on Tuesday. McBroom expressed his reluctance to use taxpayer money to house or aid migrants, stating that there are individuals in the community who are willing to provide assistance. He suggested creating a sign-up sheet for residents willing to host migrant families and seeking support from the diocese. McBroom emphasized the need to find out who would be willing to offer housing and raise awareness about the issue.

The spokesperson for the Naperville city manager’s office clarified that the City Council has not made any final decisions or taken any action on this matter. The council has asked staff to prepare an agenda item for future consideration. The date of the City Council meeting where this issue will be discussed has not yet been determined.

In Massachusetts, Gov. Maura Healey called on residents to consider sponsoring migrant families by hosting them in their homes as the state’s shelter system reached capacity. This request came after she declared a state of emergency over the migrant crisis during the summer.

Elon Musk, owner of X, warned that the government could potentially mandate residents to house migrants in their homes if shelter and hotel space become insufficient. Musk’s comment was prompted by the relocation of migrants from a shelter to a Brooklyn public high school in New York City, which resulted in school closures and remote learning. Parents expressed outrage over the disruption to their children’s education.

The police chief of Oak Brook, Illinois, revealed that nearly 40 migrants had been arrested in the area from October to mid-January, mostly for alleged property crimes. This highlights the ongoing issue of crime committed by migrants in and around Chicago.

Chicago has seen an estimated influx of 38,000 migrants over the past 18 months, with similar trends in cities like New York and Denver. Democratic city leaders often attribute the increase to Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s bussing operation, which redirects migrants to areas previously considered sanctuary destinations for illegal immigrants.

The Biden administration is facing criticism for its handling of the border crisis, particularly as the number of border encounters has significantly increased under President Biden’s watch. House Republicans are even considering impeachment proceedings against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. They argue that the administration’s policies have overwhelmed border patrol agents and left vast stretches of the border without proper security.
