Authorities in Virginia have announced the arrest of a man who had been on the run for three decades after allegedly fatally stabbing his estranged wife. Jose Cruz, the suspect, was wanted for the murder of Ana Jurado in 1991. At the time of the incident, Cruz and Jurado were married but going through a divorce. The Fairfax County Police Department described this case as not a traditional cold case, as it was solved relatively quickly, but Cruz managed to evade capture for many years.
On April 30, 1991, police found Jurado’s body on the side of a road in Falls Church after a neighbor called 911 upon hearing a scream. The cause of death was determined to be “upper body trauma.” Cruz, who was initially identified as the primary suspect, fled to El Salvador and had been living there since then.
Despite efforts by investigators, Cruz’s whereabouts remained unknown for years. In 1999, authorities traveled to El Salvador for leads, but nothing significant emerged at that time. It was discovered that Cruz had attempted to enter Canada but was denied due to fraudulent identification. Canadian border agents also noticed fresh cuts on his hand. Cruz then traveled to Houston and illegally crossed into Mexico before settling in El Salvador. During that time, El Salvador did not have an extradition process in place.
In 2022, Cruz was detained while traveling from Nicaragua to Costa Rica and was subsequently extradited to the United States. He was finally brought back to Virginia to face charges of first-degree murder. Authorities believe Cruz was crossing the border to visit family members when he was apprehended.
During his time in El Salvador, Cruz had remarried and fathered several children. He worked as a truck driver and seemed to have settled into a comfortable life. However, after 30 years, justice has finally caught up with him.
The arrest of Jose Cruz serves as a reminder that law enforcement agencies are committed to solving cold cases and bringing closure to victims’ families. The Fairfax County Police Department expressed their satisfaction in finally holding Cruz accountable for his alleged crime.
