An Indiana state trooper, identified as Azariah Keith, was critically injured when a suspected drunken driver struck him while he was assisting a stranded motorist on Saturday night. The incident occurred on a curved part of I-65 in Indianapolis, where Keith had stopped to help a disabled vehicle. Another trooper had responded to block traffic in the left lane, as the car was stopped on a narrow shoulder.
As Keith was finishing changing the tire and putting away his equipment, a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, believed to be traveling at a high rate of speed, swerved around the second trooper’s vehicle, which was blocking traffic. The SUV driver lost control, crashed into the concrete median barrier, and hit Keith and the rear of his police car.
Keith sustained critical injuries in the crash and was immediately aided by the second trooper while awaiting an ambulance. He was then rushed to a local hospital, where he is currently in stable but serious condition. The 22-year-old driver of the SUV, identified as Armaandeep Singh from Indianapolis, was arrested on preliminary charges of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, causing serious bodily injury.
Singh underwent a field sobriety test and a blood draw, with the results pending. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will determine any additional charges based on the review of the case.
This incident highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement officers while carrying out their duties, as well as the risks associated with impaired driving. The Indiana State Police are urging motorists to prioritize safety and responsible behavior on the roads to prevent such accidents.
