US Military Base in Iraq Attacked, American Soldiers Injured

Washington, January 21 – Several American military personnel may have been injured in an attack on the US base Ain al-Asad in western Iraq, according to a statement from the Pentagon’s Central Command. “A number of American servicemen are being evaluated for potential traumatic brain injuries. At least one Iraqi soldier was wounded,” the statement said. The Pentagon reported that on Saturday evening, local time in Iraq, “Iran-backed militants fired several ballistic missiles at the base.” Most of the missiles, it is claimed, were intercepted by air defense systems, while the rest hit the base. The extent of the damage is still being assessed. Earlier, the French Press Agency reported that at least 15 rockets were fired at the US base Ain al-Asad in western Iraq. Thirteen of them were reportedly shot down by air defense systems, but “two hit the base”. Since the escalation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, US bases in Iraq, as well as their troops in Syria, have been regularly targeted. Shiite armed groups operating in Iraq claim responsibility for these attacks.
