House Homeland Security Hearing: Democrats Accuse Republicans of Exploiting Grieving Mother in Fentanyl Crisis

During a House Homeland Security hearing on Thursday, Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., faced backlash after accusing a mother, Josephine Dunn, who lost her daughter to fentanyl, of being “used” by Republicans. Dunn had been invited by Republicans to share her heartbreaking story of losing her daughter to fentanyl-laced pills, while Congress continues with the impeachment proceedings against Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

Goldman expressed his condolences to Dunn but also apologized for what he believed was her exploitation as a fact witness for an impeachment investigation. He further claimed that Dunn lacked the background to understand the concept of high crimes and misdemeanors. Dunn, in response, criticized Goldman for assuming her opinions and defended her ability to think and speak for herself.

During the hearing, Goldman questioned Dunn about the effectiveness of increasing law enforcement officers at the border to combat fentanyl trafficking. Dunn disagreed, arguing that Border Patrol was being misused and that the administration was hindering their ability to carry out their duties effectively. She also challenged Goldman’s lack of experience at the border and questioned whether he had visited it himself.

The issue of fentanyl trafficking across the southern border has been a point of contention between Republicans and the Biden administration. Last September, Border Patrol Chief Jason Owens announced the seizure of over 2,700 lbs. of fentanyl, along with other narcotics, between ports of entry. Fentanyl, a potent opioid produced predominantly in Mexico, poses a significant threat to public health, with opioids being involved in over 100,000 overdose deaths in 2022.

While the Biden administration has claimed progress in combating the fentanyl crisis through increased efforts in border security, Republicans argue that more needs to be done. They criticize the administration for its handling of the situation, particularly at the southern border, and call for stronger measures, including potential military action in Mexico to target drug labs operated by cartels.

The hearing highlighted the ongoing debate surrounding the fentanyl crisis and the differing approaches of Democrats and Republicans in addressing the issue. As the nation grapples with the devastating impact of fentanyl and opioid overdoses, finding effective solutions remains a top priority for policymakers.
