Dozens of avalanches in China have left more than 1,000 tourists stranded for a week in a remote skiing village, prompting a large-scale rescue operation. The avalanches were triggered by heavy snowfall in Altay prefecture, located near China’s northwestern border with Mongolia, Russia, and Kazakhstan. The situation is said to be particularly severe, with an unusually high frequency of avalanches occurring due to the heavy snowfall.
According to Chinese state media, the heavy snow has blocked 220 miles of roads, with snow depths reaching up to 22 feet. To ensure the well-being of the trapped tourists and village residents, food, fuel, and other supplies were airlifted to the area. Additionally, a military helicopter was deployed to airlift the injured out of the village.
Rescue efforts have been underway, with one road cleared on Tuesday, allowing vehicles to enter and exit the village. Footage showed tourists dragging their luggage through the snow towards the waiting military helicopter, while outgoing cars formed a long line on the cleared road. State media reported that roads were also cleared, enabling tourists to drive their vehicles out of the village.
Altay prefecture, known as an emerging ski destination, has been experiencing heavy snowfall since early January. At least 31 avalanches were reported in the area, according to the Xinjiang meteorological bureau.
The situation highlights the challenges posed by extreme weather conditions and the importance of prompt and effective rescue operations. As the rescue efforts continue, authorities are working tirelessly to ensure the safety and well-being of the trapped tourists and residents.
