Alex Murdaugh, who was previously convicted for the murder of his wife and son, appeared in a South Carolina courtroom for a status hearing on allegations of jury tampering. Murdaugh’s lawyers argue that Colleton County Clerk Beck Hill engaged in jury tampering before Murdaugh’s guilty verdict. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is currently investigating Hill’s conduct during the murder trial, including allegations that she used her position to financially benefit from sales of her book on the case, which was later found to include plagiarized writing.
During the pre-hearing procedure, Murdaugh appeared in an orange jumpsuit alongside his attorneys Jim Griffin and Dick Harpootlian. Neil Gordon, co-author of “Behind the Doors of Justice,” revealed that Hill had incorporated portions of a BBC article in her book, leading to a halt in book sales. Prosecutors plan to call Hill to the stand, while the defense intends to call retired Judge Clifton Newman and South Carolina prosecutor Creighton Waters as witnesses.
