House Republicans to Subpoena Hunter Biden Again as Impeachment Investigation Intensifies

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., joined ‘Sunday Morning Futures’ to discuss the GOP’s ongoing probe into Hunter Biden, the U.S. border crisis, and the White House’s funding strategy. House Republicans are signaling their intention to subpoena Hunter Biden once again, following the president’s son’s willingness to testify in a deposition with impeachment investigators. In a letter sent to Hunter Biden’s lawyer Abbe Lowell, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., and House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, expressed their readiness to issue a subpoena if it meant his cooperation in their probe.

“The committees welcome Mr. Biden’s newfound willingness to testify in a deposition setting under subpoena,” the letter stated. “Although the Committee’s subpoenas are lawful and remain legally enforceable, as an accommodation to Mr. Biden and at your request, we are prepared to issue subpoenas compelling Mr. Biden’s appearance at a deposition on a new date in the coming weeks.”

This move comes as House Republicans are preparing for a chamber-wide vote on holding Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress for failing to comply with an earlier subpoena for a closed-door deposition. However, discussions suggest that Comer could recommend delaying the contempt vote if Hunter Biden and his lawyers genuinely cooperate and agree to a make-up deposition date.

Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, argued that the initial subpoena was invalid since it was issued before the House voted to formally authorize its impeachment inquiry last month. Lowell’s letter stated, “If you issue a new proper subpoena, now that there is a duly authorized impeachment inquiry, Mr. Biden will comply for a hearing or deposition. We will accept such a subpoena on Mr. Biden’s behalf.”

Though Hunter Biden and his lawyers initially offered to participate in a public hearing, the GOP committee chairs expressed openness to it only after a closed-door session had taken place. Hunter Biden chose to make a surprise appearance outside the U.S. Capitol on the morning of his scheduled deposition, where he criticized Republicans and their probe, citing invasion of privacy and attacks on his family.

The House Oversight Committee met last week to advance Hunter Biden’s contempt resolution, during which he made another surprise visit to the Capitol. Elizabeth Elkind, a reporter for Digital, focused on Congress and the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and politics, covered the event. Elkind’s previous digital bylines have been seen at Daily Mail and CBS News.

As the impeachment investigation into Hunter Biden intensifies, House Republicans are determined to subpoena him once again, seeking his cooperation in the probe. The controversy surrounding Hunter Biden continues to fuel political tensions, with both sides making their arguments for or against his compliance with Congress.
