The Amber Alert system, named after Amber Hagerman, was established in 1996 after the tragic abduction and murder of the 9-year-old girl. Amber was snatched off her bicycle in a Texas parking lot, and her body was found days later with her throat cut. The case left a profound impact on the community and inspired the creation of a national alert system to help find abducted children.
Witnesses provided vague descriptions of the kidnapper, but a clearer picture emerged of the suspect’s vehicle: a black 1980s or 1990s full-size pickup truck.
