The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) has released a shocking video capturing the moment an e-bike lithium-ion battery caught fire and exploded, causing a store in Queens to burn down. The CCTV footage, shared on social media, shows the rapid ignition of the battery, leading to a massive fire that engulfed the store packed with mopeds. Fortunately, no civilians were injured, but one firefighter suffered minor injuries.
The FDNY has consistently warned residents about the dangers associated with e-bike lithium-ion batteries, which have been linked to a significant increase in fires. In 2022 alone, over 215 fires caused by these batteries resulted in 147 injuries and six deaths in New York City. Last year’s figures are still being finalized, but FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh revealed that 17 deaths were already attributed to lithium-ion batteries in 2023, stemming from nearly 240 fires.
According to the FDNY, unregulated or improper use of these batteries can be extremely hazardous. When they catch fire, they produce an intense amount of heat and flames, often leaving individuals unable to escape their surroundings. The FDNY emphasizes the importance of using certified batteries and following safety guidelines, such as avoiding aftermarket or generic batteries, not overcharging or leaving batteries charging overnight, and refraining from plugging batteries into power strips or overloading outlets.
Lithium-ion batteries are commonly found in electric bikes, scooters, cars, laptops, tablets, phones, and other household devices. In an effort to enhance safety, New York City implemented new regulations in September, mandating the sale of all battery-powered mobility devices, including electric bicycles and scooters, to have certified batteries.
The incident in Queens serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with e-bike lithium-ion batteries. As the FDNY continues to address this issue, it is crucial for individuals to prioritize safety and adhere to the recommended guidelines to prevent further incidents.
