Rep. Greg Pence, Brother of Former Vice President Mike Pence, Announces He Will Not Run for Re-Election

Former Vice President Mike Pence’s brother, Rep. Greg Pence, R-Ind., has announced that he will not seek re-election to the House of Representatives this year. In an official statement on Tuesday, Pence cited his previous three terms in office and his commitment to delivering outstanding constituent services. He expressed gratitude for the privilege and honor of representing Indiana’s 6th District in the nation’s capital.

Greg Pence’s decision not to run for re-election adds to the growing list of House Republicans who have chosen not to seek another term at the end of 2024. This comes at a time when the House GOP Conference has been marred by division, with tensions over social and fiscal issues. The upcoming 2024 election cycle is expected to further exacerbate these tensions, especially with former President Trump anticipated to secure the GOP presidential nomination.

The 6th Congressional District of Indiana has a significant connection to the Pence family, as it was previously held by former Vice President Mike Pence for nearly a decade until 2013. However, the relationship between the former vice president and Trump became strained following the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Trump criticized Mike Pence for not rejecting the 2020 electoral college results, leading to his supporters turning against him. Rioters even called for Pence to be hanged during the Capitol breach.

Although Mike Pence briefly challenged Trump for the 2024 nomination before dropping out in late October, he has maintained that he did the right thing in certifying the election results. He has accused the former president of endangering his family.

Rep. Greg Pence’s decision not to seek re-election marks a significant development in the political landscape. As a member of the Pence family, his departure from Congress could have implications for the future direction of the Republican Party. With tensions within the GOP and the upcoming 2024 election cycle, the party’s direction and unity will be closely watched.
