FBI Continues Search for Suspect in Capitol Pipe Bomb Case, House Republicans Demand Briefing

New York Post columnist Miranda Devine has called for House Republicans to be given a “background briefing” following a two-year investigation into the planting of a pipe bomb near the headquarters of the Republican National Committee and the Democratic National Committee on the eve of the Jan. 6 U.S. Capitol riot. The FBI is still actively seeking the suspect responsible for the incident, which occurred three years ago. The pipe bombs, equipped with an hour-long kitchen timer as a detonator, were viable but did not explode, resulting in no injuries.

David Sundberg, assistant director in charge of the FBI Washington Field Office, stated that a dedicated team of agents, analysts, data scientists, and law enforcement partners have spent thousands of hours conducting interviews, examining physical and digital evidence, and following up on public tips in order to identify the perpetrator. The FBI has released images and videos of the suspect, the suspect’s backpack, the suspect’s shoes, the explosive devices, and a map of the route taken by the suspect on the night the pipe bombs were placed. Sundberg also emphasized that the agency’s $500,000 reward for information leading to an arrest is still in effect.

Despite the efforts of the FBI, the investigation has faced challenges. Former assistant director Steven D’Antuono revealed to the House Judiciary Committee that some cellphone-pinging data in the area was incomplete due to corruption by one of the service providers. This loss of potentially valuable information has hindered progress in the case.

Since the Jan. 6 attack, over 1,200 individuals have been arrested and charged with various crimes, ranging from misdemeanor trespassing to felony assault on a police officer and seditious conspiracy. However, the suspect responsible for planting the pipe bombs remains at large.

House Republicans, who have been closely following the investigation, are demanding a “background briefing” to stay updated on the progress and any potential leads. Miranda Devine argues that after two years, it is crucial for Republicans to be kept informed about the ongoing efforts to identify and apprehend the suspect.

The FBI continues to urge the public to provide any information that could assist in the investigation, emphasizing the importance of their cooperation in bringing the perpetrator to justice.
