Utah State Senator Mike Kennedy Launches Bid for Utah’s 3rd Congressional District

In a bid to replace GOP incumbent John Curtis, Utah State Senator Mike Kennedy has announced his candidacy for Utah’s 3rd Congressional District. The district, which covers part of Salt Lake City and includes the cities of Orem and Provo, has long been a Republican stronghold. Kennedy’s decision to enter the race comes after Curtis announced his intention to run for the U.S. Senate, aiming to replace Mitt Romney.

Kennedy, a family medicine doctor and attorney, previously ran for the U.S. Senate in 2018 against Romney. Although he secured the most votes in the Utah State Republican Convention, he was ultimately defeated by Romney in the Republican primary. Despite this, Kennedy insists there is no animosity between them, stating, “Party infighting is more selfish than selfless.”

During his tenure in the Utah state Senate, Kennedy played a significant role in passing legislation aimed at combatting COVID-19 mandates and banning transgender surgeries for minors. In response to the pandemic, Kennedy returned to his role as a family doctor, dedicating months to caring for patients and conducting his own research on COVID-19. He emphasized the importance of striking a balance between public health measures and preserving livelihoods.

Utah’s 3rd District has a rich political history, with former Congressman Jason Chaffetz holding the seat until 2017, when Curtis won it in a special election. Notably, former President Donald Trump secured over 56% of the district’s vote in 2020, and Curtis won by over 45% in 2022.

Kennedy’s announcement has sparked interest among other potential candidates, including Roosevelt Mayor Rod Bird Jr. and former Utah state Rep. Chris Herrod. State auditor John Dougall is also reportedly considering entering the race. The primary election is scheduled for June 25, with the general election taking place on November 4.

As the race for Utah’s 3rd Congressional District heats up, Kennedy expresses his admiration for the people of Utah, emphasizing his humble background and commitment to serving his constituents. He states, “For a fellow like me to not only have a chance to get a great education but also to serve the people of the great state of Utah… I am so impressed with the people in the great state of Utah. They’re outstanding people.”
