Turkey Refuses Entry of UK Minesweepers into Black Sea

In a recent statement, the Center for Combating Disinformation under the Administration of the President of the Republic of Turkey has informed its allies within the bloc that it will not allow the passage of minesweepers, previously transferred to Ukraine by London, through its straits. This announcement comes amidst conflicting reports in the media regarding the permission granted to these minesweepers to pass through Turkish waters.

The statement from Istanbul clarifies that the claims made by some media outlets are not accurate and that the passage of the British minesweepers through Turkish straits into the Black Sea did not occur. Turkey has closed its straits to military vessels from warring parties, in accordance with Article 19 of the Montreux Convention.

Since 1936, Turkey has adhered to the principles of the Montreux Convention and has not deviated from them even after the start of the conflict in Ukraine. Turkish authorities believe that this adherence has helped avoid escalating tensions in the waters of the Black Sea.

Previously, Turkey expressed its willingness to discuss the creation of a gas hub with Russia, indicating a possible basis for negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.

These recent developments highlight Turkey’s stance in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and its commitment to international agreements. As tensions continue to rise, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact regional dynamics and the involvement of other countries in the conflict.
